Chapter 15

Sirens

“What were you bloody thinking?” Ejan screamed at him. Loud enough for the entire ship to hear, her rage only amplified by the small confines of the Captain’s quarters. Jaygen forced himself to keep still, his gaze firmly locked on his feet as he fought the urge to cringe away from his mother. How had she found out?

“Don’t answer that. It’s quite clear that you hadn’t being thinking at all!” Ejan continued, prodding him painfully in the chest with each word. “Because if you had been thinking, you would have realised that if you died up at the Tooth, our chance of destroying Hades would have been lost. And the fate of Ethea would have been lost to Neptula. Not to mention I would have lost you.”

“But I didn’t lose,” Jaygen argued, briefly glancing into his mother’s face as he spoke, then back at his feet as she narrowed her eyes. She was a good foot shorter than he was, she may as well have been taller than the mast and rigging for how small she made him feel.

“Selfish - that’s what you are. Selfish. Risking the lives of people all over the world so you could show off to that girl, to Fieri.”

Jaygen shook his head. “It wasn’t like that. I was tricked into fighting. I didn’t want to, really I didn’t, but…there comes a time when a man has to fight…”

“That something stupid that your Da might say,” his mother snapped. He couldn’t deny it; those were exactly the words his father used. “If you’ve any sense left in you, you will climb into that armour of yours and not take it off until this war has finished.”

Jaygen wanted nothing more than to leave the tiny cabin and feel the fresh sea air on his face, to experience the colossal icebergs the longboats was forced to weave between, and if she was out on deck, spend a little time with Fieri.

“I’ll put it on when we reach land,” he resolved, attempting to placate his mother. It would be no good arguing with her while her temper was up. Yet while her rages were fierce, they were short-lived. She wouldn’t be angry with him for long.

“Yes, you will,” she affirmed. “And you won’t step a foot upon deck until we get there.” Placing her hands on her hips she stepped away. “And you can wipe that shocked expression from your face too. It’s your own fault that you must stay hidden. If you hadn’t volunteered yourself to go with the scouting party, we wouldn’t need to fake your sea-sickness.”

Jaygen rubbed the stubble on his chin. Of course, he couldn’t go out on deck as himself and then suddenly emerge later as Grimwolf. It would be only too simple to work out who Grimwolf was. And with the longboat being thick with bodies, there were a lot of eyes around. The mythical wolf-man was supposed to be meeting them there.

“So how will this work?” he asked.

“You’re Da came up with the solution.
